L’évènement micro silence suscite un temps de réflexion et d’écriture ; un temps d’arrêt, pour réfléchir à une pratique et au sens aujourd’hui donné à la relation entre l’art contemporain et l’art sonore. La critique d’art, commissaire d’exposition et musicienne Esther Bourdages est accueillie en résidence à Marseille du 22 Juin au 9 juillet 2017. Invitée à porter un regard sur microsilence, elle crée du lien entre les œuvres, les artistes, et les publics, par le biais d’une production de textes, d’interventions (radio, rencontres…).

Esther Bourdages œuvre dans le milieu des arts visuels à titre d’auteure et commissaire. Détentrice d’une maîtrise en histoire de l’art de l’Université de Montréal portant sur le sculpteur suisse Jean Tinguely, elle étudie la sculpture dans le sens élargi (art in situ, installation) en relation avec l’art sonore et les arts numériques. Sous le nom Esther B., elle joue du tourne-disques jouet, manipule des disques vinyles et enregistre des échantillons sonores sur le terrain (field recordings). Elle pratique l’improvisation, action qui lui permet de créer une musique brute, non-linéaire et ponctuée tantôt de citations sonores trafiquées ou de sons abstraits : textures principalement produites par le disque qui a connu certaines opérations d’altération (sablage, découpage, etc.). Elle fait partie du trio de platinistes Vinyl Interventions avec Carrie Gates (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) et Marinko Jareb (St Catherines, Ontario). Ensemble ils développent depuis 2002 un atelier portant le nom éponyme Vinyl Interventions dans lequel EB y donne la communication The Echo of the Vinyl Record, Between the Sound and the Visual, Between the Past and the Present. De plus, elle organise la série de concerts dédiée aux nouvelles musiques Un microphone dans une tempête de noize depuis 2002. Elle s’implique dans les centres d’artistes et les structures indépendantes depuis plusieurs années, tels que Quartier Éphémère (depuis 1996), Agence Topo, Eastern Bloc et la radio de CKUT.

Residency with Esther Bourdages

The event micro silence creates a time for thinking and writing, a time to stop and wonder about the relationship between contemporary art and sound art. The curator Esther Bourdages is hosted in residency in Marseille, from June 21 to July 9, 2017. She is invited to create a link between the exhibition, the artists and the public. She will produce some texts, make interventions (radio, meetings…).

Esther Bourdages works in the visual arts and technology art field as a writer, independent curator and scholar. She holds a MA in Art History from Université de Montréal, where she wrote about the Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely and the relationship between sculpture within an expanded field, as multimedia and sound art. Her curatorial research explores art forms such as site-specific art, installation art and sculpture, often in conjunction with technology (media and digital art) . Working as a long-term collaborator on contemporary art exhibitions with the Darling Foundry / Quartier Éphemère in Montréal has provided many opportunities to develop her work in these areas. Esther Bourdages is particularly interested in developing interdisciplinary projects that relate to contemporary ideas in the fields of architecture, anthropology, urbanism, and cultural studies. Recent work related to this has examined urban environments in relation to the social and historical fabric of cities. An especially important aspect of her curatorial practice is sound, which she endeavours to treat as an independent rather than supplementary medium. She has authored many articles and critical commentaries on contemporary art. In addition to her creative practice, she is President at Eastern Bloc, a leading Digital Art Exhibition & Production Centre dedicated for emerging artists. Also, She is actively involved in artist-run-centres and independent structures for many years, such as Quartier Ephemere / Darling Foundry, Eastern Bloc, Agence Topo, Perte de signal and CKUT radio. During 2015, she was the editor in chief of .dpi, a Journal dedicated to digital and feminism culture, produced by the Studio XX in Montreal. As a musician, she performs under the name of Esther B – she plays turntable, handles vinyl records, and records soundscapes. She has performed in Canada, the US and France ; additionally, her works have been presented in England, Germany, Palestine, Portugal, Belgium and Danemark. Improvisation allows to her to create raw, non-linear music peppered with altered sonic quotes and abstracted sounds, textures mostly produced by vinyls that have undergone specific alterations (grinding, cutting, etc.). She is a member of the turntable trio Vinyl Interventions with Carrie Gates (Saskatoon) and Marinko Jareb (St. Catherines, Ontario). This outfit has been presenting its eponymous workshop. Since 2002 She has organized A Microphone in a Noize Storm, a concert series dedicated to new music. She also do radio art pieces based on field recordings.
